The Bloomington Large Ensembles Guild, formed in 2010, is one of the most clearly defined guilds in the Alliance. The identifying characteristic is not the repertoire, rather the fact that all BLEG groups have a conductor. Some of these organizations charge for their performances, some do not. Some pay their musicians for services, most do not. Nevertheless, BLEG representatives speak for over 650 area singers and instrumentalists who play and sing with the following ensembles:
Bloomington Chamber Singers
Bloomington Chamber Singers (BCS) is a community-based chorus which provides a rare opportunity for serious amateur singers to perform major choral works and to hone their craft under the guidance of a professional conductor. Over its 40+ years, the excellence of the ensemble has been recognized by the large audiences it draws from the greater Bloomington and its laudatory concert reviews, which recognize the group’s high level of musicianship and breadth of repertoire. In addition to the annual concert series and holiday caroling, BCS enriches the community with its open sing-along of the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah. An average of 300 singers and listeners attend each year to enjoy this annual tradition, which benefits the Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
Bloomington Community Band
The Bloomington Community Band (BCB) is a founding organizational member of the Arts Alliance. Reconvened in 1974, the current BCB is the present version of a community band in Bloomington whose history goes back to pre-statehood. Proclaimed by Mayor Kruzan as Bloomington’s Official Community Concert Band in 2011, the BCB is a home to all wind and percussion players who wish to play, regardless of experience or training level.
Bloomington Peace Choir
The Bloomington Peace Choir is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is 100% volunteer driven. Our mission is to promote singing simply for the joy of it! We are a member of the international Ubuntu Choirs Network whose members believe that it is everyone’s birthright to sing. The Bloomington Peace Choir started in April 2010 with 8 members and currently has a membership roster of around 35 members. We welcome singers of all skill levels or people new to singing in a choir setting. No audition is necessary to join the choir.
Bloomington Symphony Orchestra
The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has been called a “gift to the community.” Our goal is to delight and engage audiences. From Summer Concerts in the Park to the side-by-side events we present with local youth symphonies, we make great music approachable and fun.
Add to that the many outreach activities we do (the Children’s Instrument Recovery Program , Meet the Instruments, and our annual Youth Concerto Competition), and you can see why we say the BSO has been Making Life Better for 45 Years!

Indiana Youth Musicians
Indiana Youth Musicians provides area young musicians with an opportunity to play music in a supportive, yet challenging environment. Musicians may be encouraged to try their hand at something a little different, whether it is joining a small chamber ensemble for the first time or trying out music with which they are unfamiliar.
Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble
Founded in 2007, the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble provides a performing outlet for 50 highly accomplished wind players and percussionists from Bloomington and surrounding areas. SIWE performs music for winds and percussion at the highest artistic level, engages with a diverse audience, and enhances the greater artistic community. Participation in SIWE is by invitation or audition only.
Quarryland Men's Chorus
The Quarryland Men’s Chorus was founded in 2002 as a small non-profit organization. Today the Chorus is a recognized cultural ambassador for LGBT peoples throughout the region.
